Food Security is a concept that emerged in the 70s, with the purpose of explaining the importance of food production and availability at a national and global level, with the hope of making a change and encouraging the participation of all, in the search for solutions to settle this great problem of hunger in the world. As time has passed, this concept has broadened its definition and, in turn, has demonstrated the detrimental effects of food insecurity around the world. For this reason, at the World Food Summit held in 1996, the term Food Security that we know today was presented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the following way:
Food security exists when all people have access at all times (whether physical, social and economic) to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their nutritional needs and cultural preferences for a healthy and active life.
Unfortunately, today food insecurity is the biggest problem facing our humanity despite so many technological advances, large companies, agricultural and livestock education, among other related fields. Elements that without a doubt, if correctly integrated, would greatly reduce food insecurity, famine anywhere. The cause of other serious problems, including the increase in mortality. But the reality is different, it is true that there are other elements that are somehow beyond our control, such as natural disasters. Although we can take a more active role to care for our planet and minimize the damage already caused, to protect our habitat and food.
Food Security establishes as a requirement that everyone has access to food with high nutritional value, according to their needs and preferences in a stable and continuous way, without their social and economic status being an impediment to this. It is the right of every human being to live a healthy and dignified life, without going hungry, as stipulated in the Rome Declaration on Food Security, World Food Summit held in 1996. Definitely, the participation of the government or state is vital to protect this right, although we understand that it is not obliged to provide free food to people, just because they request it. They are only fully obligated to correctional and educational institutions, depending on the country. In addition to being obliged in cases related to matters of war and natural disasters. But to settle food insecurity, hunger and poverty, in any nation, the government is a fundamental entity in the search and execution of projects to combat it. Responsibility that not only belongs to the government or the state, it is also our responsibility as citizens and human beings.
Recalling Kofi Annan’s message at the UN in 2002:
“Hunger perpetuates poverty by preventing people from developing their potential and contributing to the progress of their societies.”
Therefore, it is essential that we accept our responsibility and be part of the solution, promoting education and training for new projects that develop agricultural and livestock potential in our communities, thus increasing food production. Which will also contribute to the development and preservation of the physical and mental health of our people. In addition, we will also be part of the cultural, social and economic progress of our country.
The task is not easy, but the problem of food insecurity is the cause that millions of people in the world go hungry every year and that many of them lose their lives for this reason. So it is our responsibility to be aware and be part of the solution. Promoting education and the development of companies or projects that facilitate the food production, distribution and storage chain at a national, international and global level with high control and quality standards that prioritize food health. It is worth understanding that to be part of the solution, it is not necessary to start with large projects. Just taking a more active role and making the decision to be part of the solution, for example by supporting other agricultural projects through volunteer service or starting to develop a small home garden for you and your family, is already a big step. It may even become a great opportunity to start your own business.
